Welcome to this comprehensive masterclass on â€śLux Aeterna” from Requiem for a Dream, composed by Clint Mansell. This piece is an icon of cinematic intensity, and together, we will unlock its power through my unique progressive methodology.

What You Will Learn

This course is designed to be accessible to absolute beginners while offering sophisticated challenges for intermediate players (end of 1st or 2nd year). We follow the same natural process I use when figuring out a piece by ear:

  • Phase 1: The Foundation (Intro & Analysis): We begin by immersing ourselves in the key of G minor. You’ll learn to internalize the "tonic" (G) to anchor your performance.

  • Phase 2: Building the Core: We master the fundamental 1-6-5 chord progression (G, E-flat, D) that loops throughout the entire song.

  • Phase 3: The Theme: We identify and play the haunting main melody, building it layer by layer from simple notes to enriched arrangements.

  • Phase 4: Emotional Variation: I will teach you how to use different registers and octaves to transform the mood—from a light "lullaby" to a "stressful nightmare" or a "high-speed chase".

Technical Skills You'll Develop

As we progress, we will transition from simple single notes to advanced techniques:

  • Octave Jumps & Leaps: Mastering movement across the keyboard, especially for those with smaller hands.

  • Dynamic Control: Learning to play pianissimo (very soft) and building into a powerful crescendo to reflect the film's heavy atmosphere.

  • Advanced Arpeggios: Moving from block chords to fluid, fast arpeggiated patterns that create a "dancing" movement.

  • Musical Expression: Beyond the notes, we focus on intonation and feeling, emphasizing specific notes to communicate insistence, anxiety, and ultimate relief.

Your Path to Mastery

My goal is to help you move beyond mechanical playing. By the end of this course, the music should pass directly from your subconscious to your hands.

Whether you are here for the Sheet Music, the MIDI files for Synthesia, or the step-by-step video lessons, I am here to support you. If you feel stuck, remember to practice at your own pace and reach out—I am always at your disposal to ensure your musical journey is a success.
